Ouch.

I am without a car this weekend.....

At this moment Bing is up on a hoist at the mechanics; held hostage to the tune of nearly $600 in repairs.

Fuel injector....serpentine belt......they say I can come ransom him out of their shop sometime Monday morning.

I guess it could be worse.

Its like a really bad credit card commercial....

You know the ones that I am talking about...the ones where they list the cost of all these special items the customer is buying and then chalk up the grand total as "priceless".

I should probably elaborate.

There's a controversy running around on the internet right now where a gal in California is selling her virginity to the highest bidder.

Seriously.

Apparently ebay had the good taste to turn her down flat and, seeing how California doesn't tolerate that kind of thing, she found a bordello in Nevada (where prostitution is still legal) to host the auction.

Current bid?

Nearly 4 million.

Online articles are quoting Proverbs 31:10, joking that they now know the price of a "virtuous woman".

Boy are they wrong.

There is physical virtue and then there is virtuous. The first may be untouched, but is not necessarily pure. Purity does not sell itself to the highest bidder, regardless of your reasons....purity doesn't even consider such things. The second is the real treasure, far greater than any pricetag the world can slap on it. Apparently a chunk of the world doesn't get that so hey, feel free to pricetag the first all you want.

Sadly this gal has decided to sell herself in order to put herself and her sister through college. Now that the price has jacked itself up so high she's decided not to close the auction just yet because someone out there is bound to bid even higher.

Here is a girl who is slapping a value on herself for the rest of her life...the wrong sort of value. She'll probably see it in glowing terms, as a sign of her "worth", but really there is no glow around this transaction at all....

just filth.

Shawna Movie Review: "Rise of the Lycans"


I liked it. A lot.

Okay, so they don't answer every question, and they rush through certain parts of the storyline....its still one heck of a storyline.

What we already know: Lucian, our werewolf protagonist, was a slave to the vampires. He secretly married a vampire....and not just any vampire, but the only daughter of the coven chief. Daddy got upset and the daughter is sentenced to death, along with her unborn child. Lucian (naturally upset over the death of his beloved), rebels and leads the werewolves out of slavery and into a war with the vampire nation.

What you don't know: how Lucian became the leader of the werewolves, was Viktor really a big and heartless jerk all along, and just how it all went down.

Well, you get to find out.

No big surprises for Lucian's character...he's pretty much how he was painted in the first Underworld movie, although it takes him a little time to take on the role of leader. Big surprise...just how the werewolf slaves came into being. Bigger surprise...Bill Nighy gives Viktor a bit of (dare I say it?) humanity...sort of....for a moment anyway. Nice reinaction of Sonja's sentencing and death, even though it is a new actress in the role.

Biggest wtf moment: this is a period piece set in the middle ages so why in the world are there chicks in the vampire court milling about in modern-day leather nightclub gear? They serve no purpose but as crowd filler and stand out like freaking sore thumbs.

The film kind-of zips through the first bit...all "this-is-this-and-that-is-that" dialogue and the like but then you fall into the flow of the film and enjoy the ride. A little confusing at the begining trying to find out just who some of the new characters are and how it all fits together but that doesn't last too long. The introduction of Raze and his first meeting with Lucian is very well done, and we see what a greedy little coward Tannis is, though he does have a redeeming moment, however brief-lived it is.

Selene and Kraven are NOT in the film....there is a 30-second overlay taken directly from the first film with a voiceover (also taken from the first film)to tie this prequel into the original film but that's it....nothing new, nothing revealing. Total cheat.

So if you liked "Underworld" I recommend seeing this one. There is a PG-13 sex scene in it where no body parts are shown but we know what is going down. I would say the R rating is because there is a lot of violence (apparently no one in medieval times swore). Heads are ripped off along with other bits of gore, however, most of the film has a blue filter run over it to simulate twilight and night hours...this helps keep the blood less graphic than your typical slasher films, though there are still a few total gross-out segments.

And yes Miya, Michael Sheen (Lucian)is still totally hot in my book....

Rise of the Lycans


4:40 this afternoon will find me in a darkened theater, popcorn in hand, excitedly witnessing just how the Lycan uprising went down.

I am hoping that the movie will include Selene's family tragedy and the begin of Viktor's downfall. I checked imdb.com this morning and (seeing as how she is listed on the cast sheet) hooray, it will! Of course we probably won't see the supremely butt-kicking Selene we know from "Underworld", but I'm glad that Kate is reprising her role. Kraven is listed in the cast as well, but as he was supposed to be Viktor's right-hand-vampire during this time I guess I shouldn't be so surprised there.

For those who have not watched "Underworld" (or even know what I am talking about)well, there's not much I can say as to how excited I am that the final chapter is finally out. The second movie left me a bit cold as it took a few turns too many into the odd and unnecessary, but I have high hopes for this final installment. Miya will probably point out that I am really going to see Michael Sheen in action.....and I admit she's somewhat right, I really do think he's a bit of a hottie and have no objection to watching a movie that is centered a lot more around his character. I also admit that ever since the first movie I really have wanted to see more of Lucien and crew's backstory, other than the small flashback scene.

so let the Lycans rise...

Hobnobbing with the stars....


Apparently I am not normal.

Bill is heading up to Park City today "for lunch" and to "get out of the inversion we're having right now" (so he says).

Dan is giving him crap for not offering to take me along so I can gawp at all of the movie stars milling around town. He is also giving me crap for not driving myself up there this last weekend and taking in the sights for myself.

I told him I really wasn't interested. Seriously, its not as if I really know any of these people and, lets face it, famous or not they are just people. Why would I drive up to Park City (especially in my gas fume ridden car!) just to stare at people I will never get a chance to really meet and be friends with? Besides, I am certain these people are tired of being stared at, photographed and hounded for autographs.

He looked at me as if I were nuts.

Of course, John Cleese is supposidly up there. He'd be fun to meet, if only to tell Miya about the experience......may be I should ask Bill for a ride.

Yesterday

I woke to what has been the norm lately....clear enough to see the mountains and yet foggy over the lake. I've been meaning to drive down there and get some photos but I haven't yet....no excuse but laziness really.

I scraped the ice off my car, drove to work, and arrived to see the tree outside our office covered in flaked frost.

Gorgeous....especially for a dead tree that otherwise looks terrible and really needs to be removed.

The shots turned out amazing and I include a few here....





I really want to get a camera that handles macros better but this old one still cranks out amazing shots, don't you think?

Oh, and if you look to the right of this post you'll notice I chopped my hair off last week......

What the frak?



Anyone else disappointed in the identity of the 12th cylon? Seriously, with all this hype and waiting to find out who the final cylon was I thought they'd make it someone a little more controversial. Personally I was rooting for it being Tom Zarek, currently the acting President of the Colonial Fleet. For those not in the loop, Tom Zarek is played by Richard Hatch, who played the lead character of Apollo in the original series. The thought of the original Apollo as the final Cylon is just so deliciously twisted, however, since no one asked for my opinion, I guess that opportunity is now lost forever.....

Oh well.

Just 9 episodes left and then the series is over.

Its a bummer about Earth....and what does anyone think the deal is with Starbuck? Is she reincarnated or do we think its a big, elaborate hoax? She is, after all, the harbringer of death to the human race (if we believe the hybrid that is).

Guess it will be a few more weeks and then we'll know.....

A blast from the past.....

Wow...high school hit with a thud this morning.

A guy I went to high school with sent an email this morning to my facebook account, mentioning he was posting videos to a play I was a part of in the way back when....Tom Jones. We sent a few messages back and forth and then I decided to jump over to his youtube account to see the play.

It starts with the narrator's long monologue....and then I come out.

Oh. My. Goodness. I had to remember it was the 80's and yes we had poofy hair back then and really bad taste in clothes. Mr Maggart told me I should have worn a plain dress instead of what I wore on-stage but did I listen? No.....enjoy the mermaid skirt guys, it was high fashion when I was in high school.

I am only in the first few minutes of the play so no one has to suffer through a lot but if you want to see what I looked like my senior year of high school here you go. You only have to watch from timepoint 1:54 to 6:06...trust me, I don't come back on again after that point. Tt is wild watching this...I used to have such a crush on the guy who played my brother in the play....I loved that fact that with every performance I got to give him a little hug!

You know, looking back I see that while that outfit (and my hair) are hideous, I wasn't the absolutely huge hippo I thought I was in high school. I'm not even close to thin, but I don't look as bad as I remember either. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing after all that David posted this video.

They are from my Winter Trees series and I can only say it freaking took me long enough to get them on here...

More cards will go online as soon as I get my PC back and have access to more of my images.

I miss my PC

My PC's drive was on the verge of death....at first I thought it was a virus or just "old age" that was slowing everything down but then programs began to freeze and crash. A consultation with my computer tech/technological genius brother-in-law brought on the much harsher reality that I was NOT to turn my PC on again, ship him the drives and he'd see if it was possible to transfer the information over to new ones.

For a gal who gets truly frustrated at times with computers and all things technological, you'd think a break from my PC would be a good thing.

Not in the least.

You don't realize just how much you do with a PC until its not there. My MP3 player is synched to it so I am unable to remove annoying songs that somehow crept onto its playlists, nor can I add new tunes that have come to my attention. I have (literally) tons of saved data on my PC....everything from pictures of family, my music and video library, images that inspire a "creative spark" with my craft ideas....and pretty much every good picture that I have taken with my camera are lodged within its silicon chips. These things (some of them irresplaceable) are now out of my reach. I am being held hostage with the threat of losing so much valuable information that I didn't even realize I held. For some time now I had been telling myself I needed to buy an external hard drive to back up my files, but always managed to put it off "until my next paycheck". Oh the folly. I am SO going to get an external drive and do regular back-ups from now on.

Don't get me wrong, I love my MacBook....but so much of my personal data is on my desktop so loving the Mac isn't helping at the moment.

I guess the old saying is true, that you don't know what you've got until its gone....

Come home little PC.....I miss you more than words can truly say.

a moment to ponder the virtues of snow......


Snow.....what can you say? A lot actually.....

It freezes my car doors shut (I think I need to have the seals on the doors redone this spring)so I get a lot of exercise just trying to pry my doors open!

I think its also why my car smells so strongly of gasoline right now...all the vents are pretty much clogged with snow except the ones leading into my car! Whew...it was making me sick last night...and this coming from the girl who LIKES the smell of gasoline! I think that needs to be looked at as well....my car does not need to be flooded with the smell of gas every time I turn it on.

It appears to increase the stupidity of drivers all across the U.S., making them believe they are suddenly impervious to accident or injury, no matter how fast or recklessly they drive. I think some Einstein somewhere has worked up the mathematical equation proving this anomaly, however I have yet to find it.

As soon as you shovel the driveway odds are high that another 2 feet will dump down on you...often starting before you even get back in the house.

No matter how much you bundle up, you're still going to end up covered in snow and probably wet after using a broom to push a couple tons of snow off of your car every morning.

I never seem to get warm no matter how high I crank the heat up or how many blankets I crawl under (and a good many of them are wool so you know I've GOT to be warming up)

Snowplows inevitably miss your street and your left wondering if you need to invest in a good team of Huskies to get to work each morning...

On the days the plows DO hit your streets, you then have to dig your way out of the driveway.

Some truly amazing photo opportunites seem to lie just out of reach for a gal without 4-wheel drive....

Even though it is going to end up dirty and ucky in the roads...it really does look lovely coming down.

Its official

My weight loss blog has gone private and, while pics probably won't be posted for another day (my camera battery charger was finally found last night and is charging up my drained battery as we speak!) pics WILL be posted shortly, along with new measurements. I think my goal of a pound-and-a-half a week is not unrealistic and I am happy to say that I accomplished this goal for last week! Yeah me!

Okay, a few people have mentioned wanting access to the weight loss blog but I'll need your email addresses to send you an official invite. Email your address to springvilleshawna@hotmail.com (its an old address so I don't mind giving it out here) if you want me to send you an invite....however, do not be upset if you send me your address and I respond with a gentle "no"....as a heads-up, this will probably happen if you are male.

I have a lot of unpacking finished in my room and its coming together, though I can't find the box that my staple gun is in! Grrrrrrrr.....it must be somewhere in the basement. I'll have to organize those boxes downstairs anyway so I may as well get it over with so I can keep an eye out for the gun and a few other items that somehow slipped into the basement against my wishes. I still have to decide which pictures I want to put up on my walls since I have far too many pictures for the amount of wallspace in my room...

As far as crafts go the good news is that I FOUND MY PICTURES! Whee! These are the ones I was going to work up into blank cards for Etsy so I bundled up all of my cardstock I'd (smartly) hauled off to the office back into the trunk of my car and tonight I plan to work up a few sets. For bad news I must say that the most crocheting I did this weekend (sadly) was starting a dishcloth and then setting it aside as Sam insisted that yarn was for chewing, not crafting. As much of a "helper" as he wants to be I just can't get mad at him for getting in the way.

I got my Christmas present from my mom on Friday (a beautiful kit in fall colors of a leafy crochet bracelet). While I didn't have the time this weekend to crochet it its sitting on my bookshelf and I am anxious to start working on it. It may be a few days, however, as I really want to work up a few more items to put up on Etsy. She also sent me a knit woolen cap in gorgeous colors that is not only light and not bulky but looks darling on me! Its a good thing too since the one I bought last year off of Etsy is a tad too small and keeps slipping up my head until it falls off! Oh, and mom, I love the tag for your shop....very oh la la french peasant.

New Years was fairly uneventful for me...I headed off for bed around 10:30, read for awhile and was probably asleep by 10:30 or 10:45. Of course I woke up at midnight when our neighbors let off some fireworks (I still have no idea why people think setting off fireworks at the stroke of midnight is a good idea when fuddy-duddy's like me want to get some sleep!)

I pretty much spent NY day unpacking a little, then watch a movie, unpack some more and then watch another movie. It took several days at that pace but I ended up watching the entire Star Wars trilogy (in chronological order)....of course by the time I got to "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" I was getting so burnt out on Star Wars that I kept working while the movies played in the background! Luckily I've seen the "old" movies so many times that I could probably still recite them word-for-word so its not like I missed much. Maybe I should have had a Lord of the Rings marathon instead...or, even better, first watched the old "King Kong" and then the Peter Jackson remake! Oh well, I am sure there will be at least one other lazy weekend in my future for this year.....
